A Message from the Chair

We shape the world and address global engineering challeges!

Mechanical engineering is one of the fundamental fields that support a wide range of knowledge-based industries in the 21st century. These industries include automobiles, aircraft, shipbuilding, high-speed railway, semiconductor and display technologies, digital appliances, cutting-edge IT industrial equipment, smart manufacturing, robotics, bio-medical engineering, next-generation machines, nano-bio applications, advanced materials, energy, and various plant industries. They serve as the backbone of our country's economy and provide the foundation for future technological advancements.

Established in 1979, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Hanyang University ERICA aims to lead the development of the mechanical engineering field. Our goal is to cultivate practical, creative, and professional mechanical engineers through an industry-oriented education system. With over 6,000 graduates to date, our alumni are actively contributing to various fields in our society, including domestic big companies, small and medium-sized enterprises, research institutes, universities, and public institutions, both domestically and abroad.

Since 1999, our department has actively participated in the Brain Korea (BK) 21 program, currently conducting the 4th-phase of the program. Our objective is to cultivate advanced engineers with MS or PhD degrees in mechanical engineering. We have also developed customized education programs, including field-centered, research-centered, and startup-centered programs, in collaboration with the Education-Research-Industry Cluster at Hanyang University ERICA. In addition, we conduct various government and industry research projects and operate government-sponsored research centers to promote innovation in the field of mechanical engineering.

Our department has achieved numerous recognitions and rankings. In 2004, we achieved the second-highest ranking among mechanical engineering programs in Korea based on the Academic Evaluation Certification by the Korean Council of University Education. In 2012, we were rated as 'outstanding from an industrial perspective' in the university evaluation conducted by the Korean Council of University Education. Furthermore, in 2013, we were ranked 10th in the national evaluation of departments in domestic universities by JoongAng Ilbo. From 2014 to 2019, we conducted the national CK-II project. Since 2020, we have operated the 4th-phase BK21 Education and Research Center, which is called BK21 ERICA-ACE Center. We are currently ranked 109th in the world in the QS World University Subject Rankings. These accomplishments have solidified our position as a research and education-focused department in the field of mechanical engineering and enabled us to produce skilled mechanical engineers to lead the national industry of the 21st century.

We are committed to enhancing the nation's research competitiveness and contributing to the cultivation of advanced engineers with a strong sense of humanity in the field of mechanical engineering. We will continue to strive tirelessly to pursue world-class research and education in our field, and stay at the forefront of technological advancements that can benefit society as a whole.
